At Edgewood Ranch an important facet of
mending the hearts and lives of broken children - and often their families as
well - involves dealing with a variety of emotional, attitude and behavior
problems. Many of the children have learning disabilities. Many have taken up
bad habits learned at home and from others in their community.
Each child is assigned one of three full time counselors and meets regularly
with that counselor. In private sessions, as well as in groups, they are
assisted and encouraged to look for solutions to their problems and to come to
terms with family relationships. In addition, there is a licensed therapist on
staff three days per week to help those children who suffer from deeper
problems.
At Edgewood Children's Ranch it is
recognized that any lasting change in a child's behavior is possible only if
there is a change in the family situation that contributed to his or her
problem in the first place. Therefore, besides the requirement that parents
regularly attend chapel services with their children, they must attend weekly
classes in which they are taught necessary parenting skills. In these classes
they overcome feelings of isolation as they meet other parents with similar
problems and they become encouraged hearing of successes experienced as a
result of the total Edgewood program.
